Welcome to Encore Custom Woodworks. My name is Justin Hageman, and my passion is creating and sharing new things. For the great majority of my life, I have been a musician and have had the great opportunity to perform and record music as both a professional French horn player and a pianist. I grew up in East Tennessee, and after receiving my undergraduate degree in Music Education at Tennessee Technological University, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream of working in the Hollywood studios. While completing my graduate degrees at UCLA, I began to work as a freelance horn player and over the course of several years, became very active in the studios as well as in the concert halls throughout Southern California. From 2004 to 2015, I worked on nearly 800 different recording sessions for movies, television shows, video games, records, and commercials. I also had the amazing opportunity to perform on live television on numerous occasions, including with the 2008 Academy Awards orchestra, at the 2006 American Music Awards, and with The Beatles in 2014 on the CBS special, The Night That Changed America.
Some of my recording highlights include records with Michael Bublé, Harry Connick Jr., Barry Manilow, R.E.M., will.i.am, and Daft Punk; movies such as Rocky Balboa, Spider Man 3, Bolt, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, War Horse, X-Men: First Class, Contagion, Men in Black III, Ted and Ted 2, Jack Reacher, Godzilla, The Maze Runner, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Bridge of Spies, and Minions; and the television shows How I Met Your Mother, The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, American Dad, Penny Dreadful, and Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD amongst many others. Working in the studios and on the concert stage with some of the most amazing musicians in the world is something I will never forget and am eternally grateful to have experienced.
Life, however, has a way of bringing unexpected changes. In 2015, my family and I moved across the country for a job opportunity for my wife, Lindsey, so that she could continue working in the field of cancer research at UAB. The move was initially a shock for us, but in time, I found myself at peace and began pursuing other musical avenues that I had always wanted to but previously did not have the time to do so. This led to my focusing more on arranging, composing, and orchestrating. As a tribute to my family, SLK Music (the initials of my wife Lindsey and daughters - Sydney and Katelyn) was created from these endeavors, and I began selling mostly hymn arrangements for solo piano online. For the first few years after we moved, I had every feeling that this was how I was to continue my life. Music is and always has been an integral part of who I am – there’s no escaping it. However, after Lindsey suggested we consider building our own dining room table, the proverbial light clicked, and I officially started a new hobby. She found some plans online for a large, eight-foot farmhouse table and bench, and after diving in headfirst with some help from my dad, I completed my first furniture project. Since then, I have found my new passion – woodworking. As a musician and performer, you leave a bit of yourself on stage after a performance. Many hours of practice and rehearsals have led to that point, and it can be an extremely exhilarating experience. Working with wood has left me with that same feeling time and time again. Every piece that I have built contains a bit of myself in it, sometimes literally early on! The challenge to create something beautiful while embracing the natural tendencies of wood, an imperfect medium, is exhilarating in itself. There is nothing more satisfying than being able to take a step back at the completion of a project and look at the culmination of what was once just a big pile of lumber, screws, glue, and nails.
After completing many more projects, the idea was hatched to create furniture for my friends and family, and ultimately, this is where the second chapter of my professional life begins. During the Covid-19 pandemic when many of us were at home in isolation, I had the opportunity to build many things and hone my craftwork. Now, I want to build something for you. If you have seen a table or decorative piece in a designer furniture store that you loved, but it just wasn’t practical to purchase or the dimensions did not fit your space, that’s why I’m here. There are several online websites that feature DIY plans for building a showroom piece for much less money, but perhaps you have neither the tools nor the time to build it yourself – that’s why I’m here. Encore Custom Woodworks is here to complete your indoor and outdoor living space with the same attention to detail that I would give to anything in my own home. Let’s work together and find you and your entire family, including your pets, the perfect, customized furniture that you need.
